The Handbrake

You might be the hardest-working person you know. Which is exactly what makes the results confusing.

The equation everyone believes — more effort in, more progress out — stopped describing your life a while ago. You press harder. More discipline, another course, a new system. And you get more noise, more heat, a faint burning smell and three miles an hour.

That's not what a broken engine feels like. That's what a handbrake feels like.

A car with the handbrake on responds to the accelerator exactly this way. Plenty of engine. Plenty of fuel. Real effort turned into strain instead of speed. From the driver's seat, it just feels like a difficult car. From the outside, it looks like you're not pressing hard enough. So everyone prescribes more accelerator: push through, want it more, get up earlier.

Nobody checks the handbrake. Because nobody can see it. It was set long ago — a learned brake on going too fast, too far, too visibly and it doesn't come off just because you rev.

Effort was never the missing ingredient. You've proven that more thoroughly than anyone.

The real question isn't how fast you're going. It's how fast this engine would go with nothing holding it.
